Cytosport has been working for over 15 years in the sports nutrition supplement field. The company has an awesome line up of products that have gained them a solid reputation owing to their quality and effectiveness. From the Cytosport ‘monster’ series, I am going to review the Cytosport Monster Mass Gainer.
Before You Choose Any Gainer Product
There are dozens of weight gainer products available on the market. The protein contents in many of them are extremely low and they may be filled with simple carbs. Thus, it is important to know your body type and requirements before you select a gainer. Ectomorphs or the hard gainers may need a greater number of carbs than the mesomorphs and the endomorphs.
In short, the 1:5 gainers (5 grams of carb for 1 gram of protein) are good for ectomorphs while the 1:3 gainer is ideal for mesomorphs and ecto-mesomorphs. Endomorphs have slow metabolism hence they have lesser carb requirements. 1:1 gainers are not easily available but products which have less amount carbs will work for endomorphs on a gaining cycle.
The Monster Mass Gainer
Let’s get back to Monster Mass. This is a 1:3 gainer and therefore ideal for ectomorphs, ecto-mesomorphs and mesomorphs.
I bought a 5.95 lbs tub for $45 in chocolate flavor and I must say my experience was really good. You can smell chocolate at the other end of the room if the tub is left open. There are 18 servings in the tub. Each serving provides 50 grams of protein derived from a blend of whey protein concentrate, isolate, hydrolysates and micellar casein. The carbs comes from MCT, i.e. medium chain triglycerides and waxy maize starch mostly which forms a perfect energy fuel for extensive workouts.
I loved the taste in water as well as in milk. It forms a thick dark colored shake and gives out a strong aroma of chocolate. Monster Milk Gainer mixes well in water without any clumps but it takes a bit more effort in milk.
I took 2 scoops just after exercise everyday in water and one serving as first thing in the morning.
Digestibility
Digestibility is quite good, owing to the added digestive enzymes – papain, bromelain and lactase. I won’t say there was zero bloating but it only occurred whenever I added excessive fruits or oats in the morning. If you take it simply in water or even in milk you won’t feel any gas unless you are lactose intolerant or take too many simple carbs in your diet.
Does It Work? Yup
The most important aspect of this product is its effectiveness. I am an ecto-mesomorph and it worked well for me due to complex carbs and an awesome profile of ingredients. Each serving provides 600 calories which is good for gaining muscle mass. So, I would say it’s a great supplement from Cytosport and I recommend it to my friends and will use it again on my gaining cycles.
I won’t call it a particularly economic gainer but it isn’t too pricey either. I recommend trying it.
